Lacrosse IQ
Read the game, make the right plays, play freely
The Value of Lacrosse IQ
Your lacrosse IQ is your ability to instinctively play the game and adapt to any situation that comes up. It’s your ability to make great decisions with and without the rock in the moment. It’s your ability to process the game based on what you see and feel, read your defender, read the slide and two slide, see your teammates, and understand and execute your offensive principles and concepts like spacing, balance, off-ball movement in order to break down defenses and ultimately create scoring chances. It allows us to anticipate, flow, and play freely within our team structure, while not relying on the structure. It’s our ability to process what’s happening and instinctively make the right play in the ever changing moment based on where we are on the field, what we see and feel, where are teammates are and how they’re moving, what the defense is doing, and how to create advantages and scoring chances.
Having a high lacrosse IQ is essential to being the best, being a playmaker, playing team offense, and competing at the highest national level.

About The Sessions
We train and develop our lacrosse IQ by studying film of great offensive possessions to see the field from a wider perspective. We train identifying the slide, two slide, the defensive scheme, expanding our awareness of what we see happening on the field, and the decision making process based on what our players see and what the players on field decided to do in the moment.
Additionally, we train this by studying film of our players to reflect upon and analyze the reads in different situations, what they saw, the decisions they made, and the decisions they could have made if they anticipated, processed, read their defender, read the slide and the two slide, saw open teammates on the backside, etc.
What's Included
Film Study of College Offenses
- Studying college offenses on film provides us with a more expansive perspective of what’s happening on the field–we can see more from this view. We process and dialogue through what we see, what’s happening off-ball and on ball, and why they’re doing what they do. We process the ball handlers' reads and decisions, the off-ball movement, dodging angles, reading the slide and the two slide and defensive system.
Individual Game Film Review
- Studying ourselves allows us to see ourselves from a different perspective and develop self-awareness. The film doesn’t lie. We see how we play, our movement, our technique, the decisions we make with and without the ball. It allows us to analyze our game, break it down, and make adjustments so we show up to the next practice and game with a greater understanding of ourselves and ability to make the plays we need to make to be the best.
